Their debut album. DESCRIPTION: VDGG had broken up before they had even released an album (represented here by the inclusion of their debut single, the third and fourth bonus tracks, which was issued in late 1968 on Polydor [UK]). With the failure of the single, for which they even made a BBC appearance in support of (included here as the last 4 bonus tracks), Peter Hammill secured a solo album deal with Fontana Records. During the recording sessions he was soon joined by Keith Ellis, Nic Potter, Hugh Banton, and Guy Evans, effectingly becoming a VDGG reunion (the first of many) and thus released as the debut album by VDGG, to minor cult recognition in 1969. The sound is vintage yet the material is surprisingly mature and impressively performed (timeless) for the time period. And I say this after a reappraisal replay of my original vinyl release whilst putting together this description. Peter's voice is unmistakable, and the band plays drastically and dynamically, in a sophmoric manner, a foretelling of the progressive art-rock thespian depth the band would eventually master with their epic release Pawn Hearts. The bonus tracks chronologically document and capture the full spectrum of their musical creativity at birth. And it is a welcome to hear that the band has reconvened to shortly issue a new batch of recordings. This release comes highly recommended! SIDE BAR: I was putting this section together of some behind the scenes information about this release, but I ended up reading about and listening to Charisma label releases in my collection far too long. So you'll get the Cliff Notes version now. For you label collectors, like myself with some discretion and for a period, The Famous Charisma Label was a must have for a time (i.e., Bo Hansson, Rare Bird, early Genesis...). In part, the difficulty in getting this released sparked/precipitated the beginning of The Famous Charisma Label by Tony Stratton-Smith, who also managed The Nice, Bonzo (Do Dah) Dog Band, and Van Der Graaf Generator at the time (getting this album released was in part the reason it is credited to VDGG, as Tony wanted Hammill as VDGG to release and promote as a flagship artist on his planned label). And, really, as a group and Peter Hammill as a solo artist, they have weathered the seas of time absolutely in spades on the creative curve. Essential band and release, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this as a starting point for their music, but I must add that my starting point was with Pawn Hearts, issued in 1971 (excellent, essential, and could be considered their apex). Also an unsealed jewel case may show light signs of warehouse/transit storage wear on the outer surface of the jewel case. S/T: Self-Titled 2/1: This denotes that 2 albums are on 1 single CD. REMAST: Remastered. More specific sourcing will follow within the item’s description when available. OOP: Out Of Print. MIX: This sometimes appears in my title line and refers to a group's/artist's music having a mix of styles such a rock track with jazz then followed by a straight rock track followed by a psych rock track, etc., as opposed to a blues album with the album's tracks having predominantly one style. XT, XTKS, or #XTKS: Usually in lower case type as part of the title line, denotes bonus tracks on this release (extra track, extra tracks, or the number of extra tracks). ULC, LRC, etc.: Upper Left Corner, Lower Right Corner, etc. used in referencing the area of a defect or blemish to the jewel case or packaging.
