Bruce Springsteen's 1975 Masterpiece "Born To Run" was released on Monday August 25,1975.
Officially, the "Born To Run Tour" officially began on July 25, 1975 with Bruce and "The E Street Band" playing about a dozen shows in smaller venues leading up to a 5 day/10 show residency at The Bottom Line in Greenwich Village. I spent a lot of time there as well as Max' Kansas City. CBGB's, Great Gildersleeves. However Madison Square Garden of course was "ground zero" for most of my adolescence.
The Bottom Line shows spanned 8/13 through 8/17 with 2 separate admissions each day. One for the "early" shows and one for the "late" shows. Don't quote me on this but I believe the early shows had a scheduled start time at 8:30 PM with the late shows at 11:30 PM. The Friday night late show on 8/15 was broadcast in its entirety on WNEW-FM 102.7
This 5 day residency is widely credited with launching Bruce's career.
In any case I was there for all 10 shows. Several of my high school friends' parents (mostly fathers back then) worked in the music and recording industries.
I tried real hard to get my hands on the LP to get autographed but it hadn't even been shipped to the record stores yet. I've been collecting autographs since 1973 or so. I was however able to score this concert Promo Poster that was hiding behind the bar at the nightclub. By the time I was introduced to Bruce, with felt tip pen in hand, he'd already had a few with the band, groupies, media, etc. However the gentleman who made the introduction was one of my best friends' father and a big wig. There was one of those tall bar tables next to us to lay half of the poster on and Bruce graciously signed the poster for me.
The poster measures 23 3/4" wide x 33 5/8" High. It was framed the next Monday and always hung on my wall wherever I lived. Getting flanked over the years by Zep, The Who, Floyd, Tull, Black Sabbath, Rush and Iron Maiden.
When I moved down to Florida in the late 90's I was unpacking what I thought were carefully packaged hanging framed artwork. As I was lifting one of the boxes out of the master carton the sound of broken glass was horrifying. That's what gave Bruce's poster the 12 5/8" "battle scar" on his right leg. I put him in a sturdy poster tube and almost forgot about him until last week.
I found him in a large box mingled among a large number of Maiden poster tubes and decided it was time for a new custodian. So here we are!
I HAVE to share this story with you guys. 1993 at The Meadowlands, I'm there with my GF and we're in the 2nd or 3rd row dead center, Bruce jumps off the stage and security lifts him over the steel barricade so he can grab a dance partner for "Dancing In The Dark". I doubt that he recognized me almost 20 after the Bottom Line shows but you guessed it. He grabs Linda's right hand, Linda's left hand wraps itself around my neck and Bruce starts pulling harder. I tell him that I'd love to have 3 way but definitely not on stage in the Brendan Byrne Arena! He smirks, let's go of Linda and is immediately swamped with very very eager volunteers.
That's it boys and girls!
The poster will be shipped in appropriate packaging and fully insured for the amount of the sale,
